them help. the "chronicle" reports he is a former employee of the newspaper who worked in circulation for 37 years. he was 64 years old. the mexican government continues its search with help from the american coast guard. >> we hope for the best and we're going to give it everything we have to find them. reporter: a coast guard c- 130 plane from air station sacramento has now joined the search and rescue mission in mexico. the c-130 and its crew of seven plans to fly low and slow over the water. >> we're looking for people visually, also we have radar capability, and we also have a turret on the front of the plane with cameras we can use in the search. >> reporter: search teams say they still have hope because of the warm weather and water temperature and calmer seas. the missing tourists could still be alive. firefighters and police say they are not just searching the water. they're also checking all of the many nearby islands in case any of the seven missing managed to swim to dry land.

the survivors badly sunburned and traumatized but otherwise healthy are monitoring today's activities. the erik a 115-foot charter vessel capsized when a surprise storm hit south of san felipe around 2:30 sunday morning. the ship is now about 200 feet deep. divers plan to search the wreckage. >> this was a private fishing vessel that was chartered and tragically sunk off the coast of mexico. we have 19 u.s. citizens who have been rescued. u.s. consular official in tijuana have met with them, have provided consular services to them. >> reporter: those survivors, they are free to go. but they are still in mexico and some have vowed to stay on with the search. others there are are simply trying to coordinate passports and car keys. they lost everything. it's all at the bottom of the gulf of california right now. >> it is. and i'm sure their greatest concern is for their missing

friends. thank you, joe vazquez. several bay area families are anxiously waiting for news of those missing fishermen. mark sayre is in the east bay with a back story on the large group of friends who just loved to fish. mark. >> reporter: well, allen, family members of those missing say they have reason to be optimistic because those warm survivable waters and also mexican authorities say that this search effort will continue for several more days. >> this is actually my father- in-law right here. reporter: fred holds a pictures of his father-in-law during an earlier expedition. now seven are missing. >> it's a slow moving nightmare. >> reporter: hahn says his father-in-law loved to fish and this annual trip was always a top priority. >> my father-in-law, a great man, loves his family and he loves his friends and loves fishing like you would not believe. >> reporter: hahn says the family is holding out hope that all of the men are still alive including don lee and his close

friends albert mine, russell bautista and jean leon. the others missing include mark dorland, sean shattuck and brian wong. >> they are all close friends, family, friends, some related by marriage but basically it's a big friend trip. >> reporter: han says his family is doing the best it can under the circumstances and is in touch with both u.s. and mexican officials. >> we have been reassured by the u.s. consulate as well as governor of mexico that they are going to expand their search. >> reporter: the family has put together this missing persons poster which they are tributing in mexico through other -- distributing in mexico through other fishing groups an along the shoreline where the men could have come ashore. >> if the governments are willing to put the effort into it and they have the experience, i have a hope they will find them safe. >> reporter: one of those still missing brian wong is from berkeley. he was on the fishing trip with three of his brothers. those three brothers were among

those who have been rescued onshore. but brian wong is still missing. as for the other families, they have been told by mexican authorities that this search effort will continue until 2 a.m. friday morning. that's actually the very specific time they have been given as to how long at least for now the mexican authorities will look for the seven missing men here from the bay area. back to you >> thank you, mark sayre in becker. not guilty. casey anthony the florida mother accused of killing her 2- year-old daughter is acquitted of murder. it's a case that's visited much of the nation and the verdict came as a shock to many after riveting much of the nation. several people protested outside the courthouse, chanting guilty! karen braun in orlando with more on how the jury might have come to its decision. >> reporter: i can tell you outside the courthouse, there was actually an audible it was. people were so stunned by this verdict and a short time ago, casey anthony's father george anthony, the man that the defense claims covered up an accidental drowning, well, he issued a statement through his

attorney and basically said, despite the baseless defense that was chosen by his daughter, he does believe that these jurors came to the right verdict based on the evidence. reporter: casey anthony began to cry as she heard the verdict. >> as to the charge of first- degree murder, we, the jury, find the defendant not guilty. >> reporter: she broke down hugging her defense team when it was all over. >> i'm ecstatic for her and i want her to be able to grieve and grow and somehow get her life back together. >> reporter: it took a jury a little more than 10 hours to acquit anthony of the most serious charges. a first-degree murder, manslaughter and child abuse. then they unanimously decided they didn't want to talk to the media and explained their decision. folks lingered here outside the courthouse for some time because this was not the outcome most of these people were expecting. when the verdicts were read, there was an audible gasp.

>> that is not right! >> reporter: customers at a restaurant near the courthouse had a similar reaction. >> i was just like astounded. i couldn't believe they could be that wrong. i couldn't believe the people could make that decision. >> reporter: the defense built its case around the argument caylee's death was an accident and that she drowned in the family swimming pool. the prosecution tried to hammer away at the 25-year-old mother's credibility. they painted her as a liar and a woman who didn't want to be a mother anymore. >> our mountain of evidence did not eliminate in the jury's view every reasonable doubt. >> reporter: the jury did convict her of lying to the police during the investigation. she will be back in court thursday for sentencing. she faces a maximum of four years in prison but could walk away a free woman if the judge rules time served. all right. you're taking a live look at the scene outside the courthouse. these folks gather every night to watch the cable shows and to be part of the case and that's sort of a strange atmosphere that has sort of surrounded

this day. now, as far as casey anthony is concern, legal experts say it is almost certain that she will go free on thursday and as far as what's next for the anthonys and their statement, they say, they want the world to give them their privacy so they can begin the long difficult process of rebuilding their lives. reporting live in orlando, i'm karen brown. allen, back to you. >> karen, is it shaping up that the prosecution really didn't prove its case, or that the defense just did its job and raised so much doubt? >> reporter: you know, allen, you know, before the verdict, most legal experts were saying that the prosecution had hit it out of the park and the defense was -- did not do their job. so as far as today what they are saying is that there was just enough reasonable doubt and i listened to an interview that was done with one of the alternate jurors and he said that, you know, basically they didn't believe casey anthony's father on the stand and they explained -- they believed that her bizarre behavior after her

daughter was missing because it was because the family was so dysfunctional. and so obviously it was at least one alternate juror really bought the defense's theory. the prosecution afterwards said in fact it was difficult for them mainly because caylee's body was found six months after she was missing so there was not a lot of forensic evidence. >> i see. all right, karen brown in orlando, thank you. and there's been a mix of frustration and pragmatism among our viewers commenting online. you can convict on a circumstantial case, donna writes. this was a good circumstantial case if i ever saw one. sad thing, she will probably be free by weekend and fielding lucrative book, tv and movie offers. >> the jury acted in good faith and probably did the best they could with the evidence that was presented. family and friends of a former professional cyclist are asking the public for help finding him. they say 29-year-old anthony

michael martin from berkeley may have been last seen riding his bike in the oakland or berkeley hills on saturday. his cell phone was found by another cyclist on tunnel road in berkeley. his former girlfriend said that he had been depressed. >> he was down. definitely. yeah, he had a lot on his plate. he had been sick. he was recuperating but still not 100%. he had way too much on his list of things to do and he wasn't getting them done. >> martin was considered weaker than usual due fasting. he was riding a fluorescent green and white road bike. anyone with information regarding martin's disappearance is asked to call berkeley police. surveillance video shot sunday night shows a partial view of the fatal shooting by a bart police officer. that's according to bart's didn'tty police chief who says the footage contains investigative leads. he wouldn't elaborate on what that specifically shows. bart says that a man shot on the civic center platform was drunk, had a broken bottle and

was aggressive. one of two officers on the scene was carrying a taser but didn't use it. >> any deadly force situation, tasers is a tool of availability. the officer is going to make split second decisions regarding how to respond with deadly force. our investigation will reveal why he chose to use his weapon. >> starting monday, all bart police officers will be required to carry tasers. bart police say they haven't received any witness cell phone video of what happened but they are asking people to come forward if they have any. next, dozens of cars go up in flames in the east bay. the clues that have police pointing to illegal fireworks. busted. the sneaky way one woman tried to break her husband out of prison. and it doesn't take a lot to do damage. the popular food ingredient that can be highly toxic even deadly to your dog. ,, ,,,,,,

francisco are working to repair a water main break that's flooded as many as three homes. the main that ruptured is near 21st and hampshire streets. a spokesman with the city's public utilities commission says a contractor working in that area may have caused this trouble. if you live in that neighborhood, you can expect to have low water pressure throughout the evening tonight. repair work, they say, should be done by 10:00. illegal fireworks might be to blame for a fire that damaged dozens of cars. it happened this morning in the junkyard at 45th avenue and international boulevard in east oakland. it took firefighters half an hour to put out those flames. at least three cars totally burned. one operational vehicle was destroyed, as well. the fire caused about $75,000 in damage. one firefighter injured his back fighting those flames but he is expected to be okay. and more flames near the bay point shoreline. look at this. also possibly caused by fireworks.

contra costa firefighters battled several grassfires that broke out within a mile of each other last night. they burned several acres of federal land near port chicago highway. and apparently sent quite a few kids running from that area. one woman left a mexican prison with some extra baggage that included her husband. police stopped maria del mar. when they spotted her pulling a black bulky suitcase out of the prison, inside they found her husband juan curled up in the fetal position as you can see. she was arrested and charges are now pending against her. well, coming up, we have a warning for pet owners. >> he had bleeding along the axle area or armpit area and had bleeding around the eyes. >> the common sugar substitute that could prove deadly for dogs. a floating threat. tons of debris from japan's tsunami is drifting our way. when the wreckage could reach

dr. kim mulvihill joins us. kim. veterinarians have issued a warning tonight about a popular sweetener that's not sweet for dogs. dr. kim mulvihill joining us with details on what happens. kim. >> reporter: well, allen, the sweetener is called xylitol. it's as sweet as sugar but with a third fewer calories. while it's considered a good sugar substitute for humans, it's not good for dogs as one bay area pet lover unfortunately found out. reporter: four years ago, a corgi named billy found a new home in san jose. the little puppy soon grew into a playful mischievous member of the family. >> s of a very fortunate well cared for pet. >> reporter: however this was billry just a few days ago hooked up to ivs and a catheter, severely ill with liver failure and internal bleeding. >> when he actually presented to us, he had been bleeding in the armpit area and had bleeding around the eyes. >> reporter: according to his owner, billy had got known a grocery bag and ate several packs of this sugar-free gum. the gum contains a sweetener called xylitol.

it's used in many products even toothpaste. in humans, it's considered safe. but in dogs, xylitol can be toxic. despite five days of inturbulence i have care he had multiple or -- intensive care, he had multiple organ failure, he couldn't be saved. he was euthanized, his owner heartbroken. >> down, good boy. >> reporter: this vet specialist says dog owner need to know the danger. >> i personally would never buy gunman with xylitol because i have dogs. if i leave a pack around, i wouldn't want my dog to get into it. >> reporter: since 2006, calls to the national animal poison control center have tripled. makers of this gum urge pet owners to keep sugar-free products away from their pets. billy's owner wishes she had known. >> to the doctor that help her when she came in i can't believe this. i had no idea. why isn't there a warning on

the label? >> reporter: while billy ate a lot of xylitol gum, dr. mccleon has seen symptoms with a single piece including vomit i, seizures and other symptoms. keep these products out of their reach. that's the problems. dogs hunt things out. they get into everything. >> sounds like her advice just maybe not have it at all. >> reporter: stay away from it if you have a pet. that's her point of view. >> thank you. a power plant is feeling the sting of hundreds of jellyfish. workers are struggling to deal with the swarms of jellyfish clogging the plant's filters. well, what they are trying to do is collect a massive amount of jellies before they shut down the power plant's production of electricity for israeli cities. not a good thing especially with the sweltering heat of the summer. debris from japan's quake and tsunami may wash up at local beaches in a couple of years. you remember cars, homes, just about anything in between was

is actually about 1,000 feet. let's look outside. it's our cbs 5 camera looking towards the bay water where a small craft advisory has been lifted. otherwise haze drifting into the bay from the golden gate bridge. with the overcast skies it's currently 60 in pacifica, 67 in san francisco. it was in the triple digits in livermore now at 97 degrees. upper 80s in santa rosa. it's still hot this evening if you are out and about inland. otherwise pleasant conditions bayside. we have patchy stratus lining the coast. tomorrow, these are the headlines. coastal fog early around the bay, also during the afternoon hours. going to take a while to scrub out. but no more triple digits. today was the hottest day of the workweek. we are now end, a gradual cooling trend. that's it. that's really interesting. that's some tropical moisture that's been lifting out of mexico causing the very muggy conditions across the southland

and also looking towards the central valley in the high sierra. we are under the influence of high pressure albeit weakening. that's why we will allow cooling trend to work its way into our area beginning as early as tomorrow. but here's your pinpoint forecast. you notice the patchy fog wants to push into the san mateo coast and wrap around the almaden valley towards the santa clara area. and then by about 9:00 tomorrow morning, everybody begins to realize some sunshine after tonight's lows in the 50s, 40s and 60s, rebounding to a cooler day, 60s at the coast, 70s bayside and 90s inland. here's the extended forecast. sunny skies each day but notice the cooling trend that will last each day through this time next week. that's your pinpoint forecast. hang out, stay with us. we'll be right back. ,,

julie watts on the consumerwatch with a billing problem compounded by a crime. >> reporter: grace is a chinese english who doesn't speak much english and still lives by the customs of china. she contacted consumerwatch when she received two pg&e bills totaling $90,000. turns out they were from grace's former tenant. friends of friends who for three months rented out a unit grace owns in san francisco's sunset district. according to this police report, they ran a thriving marijuana farm inside that unit with electricity they stole bypassing grace's pg&e meter. >> i never see there anybody. never see this people. every month my friends give me rental money. >> reporter: what grace did renting an apartment to a friend of a friend without a background check is common in immigrant communities like san francisco's chinatown.

bring you this happening near trace advice now. and chopper 5 has just gotten close to it. you can see the smoke there. this is a fast-moving brush fire. it is we are told threatening structures at this moment. but the big thing, the flames have already blackened 150 acres. it started about 4:30 we're told this afternoon. this is san joaquin county right where interstate 580 and 132 intersect. and cal fire just got off the phone with us. they say that 7 planes are being used to battle this fire. there are 20 engines there as well along with a crew so 150 acres near tracy. we'll have an update coming up. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,
